The aims of the Household Cavalry Museum Development Project are to secure the future care and well being of the Museum’s nationally important collections and to make them available and accessible to the broadest possible audience.

These aims will be accomplished through the creation of a purpose built museum in the Horse Guards building in Whitehall, central London. This building forms the backdrop to Horse Guards Parade Ground where the Household Cavalry have mounted the Queen’s Life Guard daily in a ceremony that has remained broadly unchanged for over 350 years.

The Museum will provide a visitor with a living experience where they will not only be able to observe the mounted and dismounted cavalrymen on duty but also gain access to a working stables and see behind the scenes of public duty.

In addition the Household Cavalry’s existing museum at Windsor will be refurbished and developed as a support facility for the London operation. The Museum will therefore become a single museum on two sites with complementary functions: collections management and formal education at the Windsor location, and broad public access and lifelong learning at Horse Guards.

The Household Cavalry Museum will be highly distinct from other military museums because it will not only include collections of greater heritage merit but also of broader public appeal. The live horses and stable environment coupled with the Household Cavalry’s unique historical links to the Monarchy will appeal to children, females, families, minority ethnic groups and tourist markets that otherwise may not visit a regimental museum.

The museum development project will cost £4.5 million and to date a total of £4 million has been raised towards this total. This has been achieved through the generosity of the families, connections and friends of the Household Cavalry and a significant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It demonstrates how strongly they all believe in the ethos of the Household Cavalry and in the public and heritage benefits that the project will bring. The Household Cavalry Museum Trust is now urgently seeking to raise the final £500,000 that will enable the project to come to fruition.
